Computer Resources

MHMICROSCOPY Accounts:

• Information about MHmicroscopy Logon accounts - logging on at the computer key board  (handout version)
• Changing Your MHmicroscopy Password  (Including an expired password).
• Forgotten Password - Contact a facility director by phone, in person, SMS or e-mail.  Passwords will be issued in person, sealed envelope or by phone.  Please note that ITS & OIS School of Medicine rules forbid the sending of passwords by e-mail.
• If are having problems connecting over the network and have recently changed your password please try logging off at your computer and on again.  Also remember to have mhmicroscopy\ before the user name!  If you still can not connect contact Michael 843-3268 (usually forwards to cell phone) or Neal for assistance.

Transferring Files:

• Information on how to make network connections (Windows PCs) - Connecting from your Windows PC to MHmicroscopy computers over the network - Also connecting from MHmicroscopy computers to other MHmicroscopy computers.
• FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access - transferring large files via Ethernet.  This file transfer method is preferred to sending files using e-mail, and does not suffer from attachment and e-mail box size limitations.
• VPN (Virtual Private Network) at UNC - Off campus access to files to/from UNC using Microsoft networking.  Also should be used with FTP transfers for security.  Available for UNC employees & students only.  Contact a facility director for a handout
• USB key/thumb/portable hard drives:  Most computers in the facility have USB ports.  If you have written to a device one must perform, and let complete successfully, a "Safely remove Hardware" operation before unplugging it.  Due to operating system limitations the Leica SP2 confocal computer (\\Laplace) and the AFM computers due not have functioning USB ports - just transfer your data over the network to an Image Processing Workstation and use that computer's USB port.
• Firewire ports for portable hard drives are available on  Schott  -  Brewster  -  Nomarski  -  Snell.  Remember to perform a "Safely remove Hardware" operation.
• CD & DVD writers.  The image processing workstations have DVD/CD writers.  Most other computers have CD writers and some have DVD writers.  The main software which can be used for DVD & CD creation is Roxio. 
• E-mail is generally unsatisfactory for two reasons:
  • There is a size limit
  • Certain files types will be stripped out of the message without any notice being given.  Stripping is based on a scan of the actual file contents, and is based on a match to the file header contents, rather than on the extension of the file name. Forbidden files types are: ade .adp .bas .bat .chm .cmd .com .cpl .crt .exe .hlp .hta .inf .ins .isp .js .jse .lnk .mdb .mde .msc .msi .msp .mst .pcd .pif .rar .reg .scr .sct .shs .shb .url .vb .vbe .vbs .vcs .wsc .wsf .wsh .zip 

Image Processing Workstations:

• Image Processing Workstations:  Schott, Brewster, Nomarski  -  Snell  require an MHmicroscopy account to log on at the keyboard or to get network access.

• Remote desktop access must be setup by prior arrangement.  Remote desktop is built into WindowsXP, Vista, 7.  It is also available for Macs and Linux machines.  Remote access allows use of some proprietary software.  e.g. Zeiss 510 on \\Snell

• Users from outside of the Medical School may not be able to access file shares on \\LAPLACE the Leica SP2 confocal computer.  If you have problems accessing \\LAPLACE or any other computer please contact Michael
